Toll in Iceland
Since January 2026, a distance-based road usage fee has applied to the entire public road network in Iceland. The fee is calculated per kilometre driven and applies to both the Ring Road and secondary roads throughout the country. A vignette is not required.
A separate tunnel fee is charged for the Vaðlaheiðargöng Tunnel in northern Iceland. The 7.5 km tunnel shortens the route between Akureyri and Húsavík by approximately 16 km.
Toll roads
The road usage fee applies to all public roads in Iceland.
The Vaðlaheiðargöng Tunnel is subject to a separate toll.
Exceptions
The Hvalfjarðargöng Tunnel has been toll-free since September 2018.
Regulations for cars, motorcycles, caravans and campervans
In Iceland, vehicle types are categorised according to their weight. You can check the weight of your vehicle in the registration certificate. The weight may also be indicated in the vehicle registration document.
| Vehicle category | Weight |
|---|---|
| Category 1 | Motor vehicles up to 3.5 t GVW |
| Category 2 | Motor vehicles between 3.5 and 7.5 t GVW |
| Category 3 | Motor vehicles over 7.5 t GVW |
Payment
The distance-based road usage fee is not paid at a physical toll station. For vehicles temporarily imported into Iceland, the administration is handled by Icelandic Customs. The vehicle’s odometer reading is recorded upon entry and again upon departure.
For vehicles registered in Iceland, the fee is settled monthly via the official government portal. It is initially based on an estimated average mileage, which is later reconciled with the actual distance driven when the odometer reading is submitted.
The tunnel fee for the Vaðlaheiðargöng Tunnel is charged exclusively electronically. Cash payment is not possible. Payment can be made online by credit card up to 24 hours before passing through the tunnel or within 3 hours after the journey.

Are rental cars subject to tolls?
Yes, rental cars in Iceland are also subject to toll charges. For vehicles registered in Iceland, the road usage fee is generally processed through the car rental provider. The costs are passed on to the driver, often with an additional service or administrative fee.
Some providers automatically charge the tunnel fee. The passage is recorded via the vehicle’s number plate and the fee is invoiced later. If no direct payment is made, an additional administrative fee may also apply.
Tolls in neighbouring countries
As Iceland is an island, there are no direct neighbouring countries in the conventional sense. Nevertheless, the following nearby countries levy tolls to finance and maintain their motorways:
