Toll in Ireland

The toll in Ireland is an issue that has affected both locals and tourists for many years. The Irish government has introduced a system of toll charges to fund the cost of building and maintaining the country's motorways and dual carriageways. There are several types of toll systems in Ireland, including electronic toll systems and manual toll stations.

Toll roads

The toll is only charged for certain sections of a motorway. The motorway network in Ireland stretches from the capital Dublin to the rest of the country. Dublin is the hub to reach all cities and vice versa. Below you will find a list of the toll sections:

Regulations for cars, motorcycles, caravans, and campervans

The determination of vehicle classes for paying tolls is quite simple in Ireland. A distinction is only made between cars and motorcycles. However, the category of cars also includes caravans and campervans. This results in the following table:

Category Description
Motorcycles Motorcycles of all kinds
Cars Cars, caravans and campervans

Payment

In general, toll payments at toll stations in Ireland are made either in cash or by card. The M50 motorway is the only exception. Here, the toll is collected automatically by the e-flow license plate recognition system when driving on the motorway. You can register and pay for your license plate before driving on the M50. It is also possible to pay after driving through the section of motorway. However, this only applies until 8 p.m. the following day at the latest, otherwise an additional fine may be imposed. The toll fee for the M50 can only be paid at a payment point (Payzone) or by credit card.
