E-vignette Hungary

Tolls in Hungary are collected through a digital vignette. Motorway vignettes are linked to a vehicle registration number and can be bought online at vintrica. You can purchase the electronic vignette quickly and easily using PayPal, online banking or a credit card. A confirmation will be sent to your e-mail address and, if you wish, you will receive a text message confirmation that you can show at a checkpoint.

County vignettes

In Hungary, you have the option of purchasing annual vignettes for individual counties (= federal states). The so-called county vignettes are valid for a complete vignette year. The current annual vignette is valid from 1 January 2024 to 31 January 2025.

You can buy a single e-vignette for the following counties: Bács-Kiskun, Baranya, Békés, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Budapest, Fejér, Csongrád-Csanád, Győr-Moson-Sopron, Hajdú-Bihar, Heves, Jász-Nagykum-Szolnok, Komárom-Esztergom, Nógrád, Pest, Somogy, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, Tolna, Vas, Veszprém, Zala.

Regulations for cars, campervans, buses and trailers

The individual fee depends on the vehicle you are driving. If in doubt, please check the permissible total weight in section 1 of the vehicle registration certificate (V5C) listed under "F.1 Max. permissible mass".

Toll regulations for lorries

In Hungary, instead of paying a flat-rate toll for a lorry, you have to pay a route-dependent toll. This is based on the kilometres driven, the permissible total weight, the number of axles, the road type and the environmental class. You must register the lorry toll in the Hungarian HU-GO system.

Fines

If you drive without a valid e-vignette, you risk heavy fines. We therefore recommend buying a vignette for your category before you set off.

How long are you allowed to drive in Hungary without a vignette?

If you accidentally drive on a route requiring a vignette and notice this, you still have 60 minutes to buy a valid vignette. You will then not receive a fine.

How is the vignette obligation checked?

Compliance with the car toll on motorways is monitored using video surveillance. The cameras are often located directly after the border crossing.

What penalties do I face without an e-vignette?

You will receive a fine by post. This has to be paid within 60 days, otherwise the fine will increase considerably.

Can I transfer my Hungarian vignette?

Yes, you can transfer the e-vignette to other vehicle registration numbers. However, this is only possible if the vehicle owner changes. In case of a write-off or theft, the e-vignette can be transferred to another vehicle of the same toll class.
For more information, contact the toll operator's customer service department:

Tel: +36(36)587-500
E-mail: ugyfel@nemzetiutdij.hu

Can I change my number plate at a later date?

Before the start of validity: You can change the licence plate of the vignette before the first day of validity if you use the flex service offered by vintrica.com.

During validity: In the event of an incorrectly entered registration number or country code with a maximum deviation of 3 characters, you can submit the correct registration number on site at a customer service office of the National Toll Payment Services PLC within 60 days from the start of the validity of the vignette. For the procedure you need the registration certificate, confirmation of the purchase of the vignette and your passport. The fee for changing the vignette is HUF 1470 (approx. £3.45). If you have mixed up the 0 (zero, the number) and the O (o, the letter), the change is free of charge.

Can I postpone the start of validity after purchase?

Only the flex service at vintrica.com offers you the option of changing the validity period at any time before the first day of validity.

Which vehicles are exempt from the vignette?

Only the following organisations are exempt:

  • The Hungarian Armed Forces for the protection of public order and NATO
  • bodies for the management of the public road network
  • Civil protection
  • Transport authorities
  • Bodies for toll collection and monitoring tasks
  • Other bodies with authorisation to use
