E-Vignette (Rovinieta) and bridge toll Romania
A motorway vignette (Rovinieta) is required on Romania’s toll road network for cars, passenger transport vehicles and goods vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tonnes. Goods vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes are instead subject to the distance-based TollRo system.
The e-vignette can be conveniently purchased online at vintrica.com and paid for by PayPal, online banking or card. You will then receive confirmation by email and, if requested, additionally by SMS.
Toll motorways
In Romania, tolls apply on the national road, expressway and motorway network. Cars and other passenger transport vehicles, as well as goods vehicles weighing up to and including 3.5 tonnes, require a vignette. Goods vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes are instead subject to the distance-based TollRo system.
Exceptions
Sections of national roads within built-up areas, between the entry and exit signs, are exempt. Vehicle combinations and trailers are not subject to a separate vignette requirement.
Special Toll
A special toll is charged at the following locations:
- Danube Bridge: Ruse (Bulgaria) - Giurgiu (Romania)*
- Danube Bridge 2: Vidin (Bulgaria) - Calafat (Romania)
* The bridge toll applies only when travelling from Ruse → Giurgiu.
The previous Romanian bridge tolls for Fetești–Cernavodă and Giurgeni–Vadu Oii, as well as for travel from Giurgiu to Ruse, were abolished on 1 October 2026.

Regulations for passenger cars and commercial vehicles
In Romania, vehicles subject to the vignette requirement are divided into four categories. The classification is based on the type of vehicle and, for passenger transport vehicles, the number of seats. This results in the following categories:
Category for goods vehicles
| Category B | Goods vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of up to and including 3.5 t |
Categories for passenger transport vehicles
| Category A | Cars with up to 9 seats (including the driver) |
| Category C | Vehicles with more than 9 and up to 23 seats (including the driver) |
| Category D | Vehicles with more than 23 seats (including the driver) |

Sales points
You can buy the Romanian vignette (Rovinieta) at petrol stations near the border or online. We recommend purchasing online here at vintrica.com.
Fines
The validity of the vignette is checked electronically via camera systems and during inspections by authorised personnel. Anyone using the toll road network without a valid vignette may be fined. We therefore recommend purchasing the appropriate e-vignette before setting off.
Can I transfer my Romanian vignette?
Once a vignette has been issued, it generally cannot be cancelled or subsequently amended. However, incorrect information relating to the vehicle registration number or vehicle details may be corrected under certain conditions. The selected validity period cannot be changed.
For questions or corrections, please contact the Romanian road authority CNAIR.
Who is exempt from a vignette?
Motorcycles are exempt from the vignette requirement in Romania.

In the following neighbouring countries there is also a toll obligation to finance and maintain the motorways. You can find more information on motorway toll stickers in neighbouring countries and their validity here:
