Camping and Hiking Rules in Turkey

  • Wild camping and free standing with a motorhome or van are not prohibited in Turkey, though local camping bans should be respected.
  • It is not allowed to camp wildly on private property, military areas, nature reserves, or national parks.
  • Due to the high risk of wildfires, open fires are strictly prohibited in some regions of the country. For safety, it is advised to avoid open fires in all areas.
  • Cultural and natural artifacts are considered state property in Turkey, and their removal can lead to severe penalties. Therefore, while hiking, camping, or at the beach, you should not take stones, coins, shells, or other found items. Sand must also not be removed. It is also advised against purchasing souvenirs made from shells or corals.

Destinations for an Adventure Holiday in Turkey

Cappadocia / Göreme

The Cappadocia region in Central Anatolia and the Göreme National Park located there are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites for both culture and nature. They are renowned for their unique rock formations made of tuff.

The Cappadocia region includes impressive man-made structures like the cave architecture of Cappadocia as well as natural formations such as the fairy chimneys. These chimney-like rock formations have been formed over thousands of years through volcanic eruptions and erosion.

To fully appreciate the rock formations of Göreme with all their details, an extensive hike through the national park is recommended. On your tour through the park, be sure to explore the inventive living spaces and the spectacular churches and monasteries built into the Cappadocian cave architecture.

A hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia offers a unique perspective of the tuff stone landscape. From the basket of the hot air balloon, you get a comprehensive view of the impressive scenery – a unique experience that should not be missed on any holiday in Turkey.

Ölüdeniz

Ölüdeniz is a picturesque coastal resort on the Turkish Aegean coast. It is especially famous for its white sand beaches and the sparkling water of the Blue Lagoon, which shimmers in various shades of aquamarine. The lagoon has been awarded the Blue Flag for its exceptional water quality and offers a relaxing bathing experience with its gentle waves.

For those who prefer action and adventure, exploring Ölüdeniz and the Turkish Aegean from above is a must. The best way to do this is by hiking or taking a cable car ride up Mount Babadağ. Those who are not afraid of heights and wish to experience breathtaking aerial views should not miss a paragliding flight from Babadağ.

For active travelers who prefer to keep their feet on the ground, a hike through the Butterfly Valley in nearby Fethiye is an excellent option.

The "Butterfly Valley" can be reached from Ölüdeniz by boat. In addition to the eponymous butterflies, the valley features steep cliffs, deep gorges, and a waterfall.

Olympos

The remains of the ancient city of Olympos are picturesquely located along the Akçay River in Lycia on the Turkish Riviera. Since Olympos has not been continuously inhabited since the 15th century, nature has reclaimed much of the ancient buildings.

Today, the atmospheric setting of the ruins can be explored in an open-air museum. Some of the still recognizable structures include a bridge over the river, a Roman bath, and a temple from the 2nd century, the remains of which are located in a marshy lake.

Although Olympos is now permanently inhabited by only about 10 people, as a tourist, you can stay in the gorge in front of the ancient city. There, you will find so-called treehouse hotels – small, rustic wooden houses that are particularly popular among adventure travelers and backpackers.

You can enjoy the Turkish Riviera during your stay on the beaches of Olympos and Çıralı. Since this area is a sea turtle nesting site, you should behave respectfully towards nature.

The city of Olympos was named after the adjacent mountain of the same name, which is now called Tahtalı Dağı. You can easily reach the summit of the mountain using the Olympos Teleferik cable car. If you're looking for more activity, you can climb Tahtalı Dağı on foot or follow a section of the Lycian Way hiking trail, which runs between Fethiye and Antalya at the foot of the mountain.

Lake Van

Lake Van in eastern Turkey is not only the largest lake in the country but also the largest soda lake in the world. A soda lake is defined as a lake whose water has an unusually high pH level. This characteristic makes Lake Van biologically very interesting. Although the water is not potable, it is suitable for swimming.

Exploring Lake Van by boat offers the best experience. A popular destination for boat tours is Akdamar Island, where you can visit the over 1,000-year-old Armenian Church of the Holy Cross. This impressive, culturally significant building was destroyed in the 20th century but was fully restored in 2007.

Lake Van is currently still a hidden gem for outdoor holidays. Those who wish to camp in untouched Turkish nature, between the sparkling lake and the snow-covered Süphan Dağı, will find it mostly serene. Thus, Lake Van is the perfect destination for active vacationers looking to escape the excessive bustle of heavily trafficked tourist areas.
