Why do I need a vignette for Austria?

In Austria, the vignette has been mandatory since 1997 for all vehicles up to 3.5 tons using motorways and expressways. The revenue is used to maintain, improve, and ensure the safety of the road network. Without a valid vignette, drivers risk fines of up to €240.

When will the 2026 annual vignette go on sale?

Sales of the 2026 annual vignette will begin on December 1, 2025.
From that date, the vignette is immediately valid—meaning it can already be used in December 2025—and remains valid until January 31, 2027.

This gives the annual vignette a total validity period of 14 months. The regulation particularly benefits frequent drivers, allowing them to purchase the vignette early and start using it right away.
